One hour east of Denpasar, the crowds stop and Indonesia starts over. Sumba: an island of animist clan villages, wild horses on empty surf beaches, and — improbably — two of the most awarded small hotels on earth. Then Flores: gateway to Komodo's dragons, pink beaches, and manta highways, best seen from the deck of a phinisi — the two-masted wooden yacht Indonesia has been building for centuries. Time Out just named Sumba the best place to visit in all of Asia; the premium editorial world is whispering about both islands the way it whispered about Bali in 1975. Use Bali for its airport and nothing else.

Nine days. Land in Bali, fly straight out to Sumba, then to Flores, sail Komodo, fly home. (Raja Ampat, the deeper cut, is its own trip — opposite season, expedition logistics. Next time.)

Same-day connection from Bali to Tambolaka — a one-hour prop flight, four daily. Then an hour's drive to the Kodi coast and Cap Karoso: a brutalist-tropical design hotel with its own three-hectare farm, artists in residence, and a beach club on an empty Indian Ocean break. Travel + Leisure It List and the Michelin Guide both got here before the crowds did. It earns it.

Days 3–4 — Nihi Sumba

Transfer down-coast (2.5–3 hours of honest Sumba road) for three nights at Nihi Sumba — Robb Report's #7 hotel on earth (2025), Condé Nast Traveler Gold List 2023, readers' #1 in Indonesia 2024. Three nights is the floor, not indulgence — the resort runs a three-night minimum (five-plus in peak season), and anything less here is a rounding error you'd regret anyway.

Labuan Bajo exists to put you on a boat. Book a private phinisi — Prana by Atzaró if the trip is the splurge (Condé Nast Traveller Gold List; the largest phinisi ever built), Celestia as its closest rival (Robb Report and T+L both covered her; the FT put her in "five ways to set sail"), Vela, Aqua Blu, or Dunia Baru otherwise. The tier matters more than the name: Komodo's budget fleet has a documented record of fires and sinkings — charter from operators with real safety systems, and treat a suspiciously cheap boat as exactly that. Alternative land days (swap for one boat night): the overnight trek to Wae Rebo — a cloud-forest village of cone-roofed drum houses, UNESCO-awarded, sleeping communally under one roof. Four hours' drive plus a three-hour climb; it earns every step.

The brief

When to go — Both islands share a dry season: April–November. May–June and September are the sweet spots — landscapes still green, boats uncrowded. July–August is peak (book charters 6–12 months out). January–February brings the rough seas — parts of the charter season effectively close; don't plan a boat then. Sumba's Pasola — the mounted spear-fighting harvest festival — happens February–March only, dates set by priests weeks ahead; note that puts it opposite the sailing window, so it's a separate, land-only trip worth making once. Komodo's mantas run year-round.

The practical part — Fly the long haul in the pointy end if you like — to Bali. From there, every leg is a prop plane with one cabin class and a shifting schedule; no premium product exists east of Denpasar, and pretending otherwise just misprices the trip. Reconfirm everything, and never book an international connection tight against a Komodo boat return. Komodo NP now runs daily visitor quotas and app-based booking with fees that keep changing — have your operator confirm current rates. Vet any boat that isn't top-tier for life rafts and radios; the budget fleet has a record. Sumba ground transport is car-with-driver (~$60/day) and cash-only villages — carry small notes. Both islands are malaria-risk areas — standard guidance recommends antimalarial tablets for Sumba and Flores, resorts included: see a travel clinic before you fly, and cover evenings. Nearest serious hospitals are in Bali; insure accordingly.

How do you get to Sumba and Komodo?

Fly into Bali, then one-hour prop hops: Denpasar→Tambolaka for Sumba, Denpasar→Labuan Bajo for Komodo. No premium cabins exist east of Bali — budget the comfort into the long haul instead.

When is the best time to sail Komodo?

Is Sumba worth it?

Time Out named it the best place in Asia, and two of the world's most awarded small hotels sit on its coast. If you want wild landscapes with 1975-Bali emptiness, yes — that's the whole thesis.
